Why Hemingway Hill is the Best Spot for Tulip-Picking Fun
Over thirty different colors of tulips will be blooming at various times. Tulips come in an endless array of colors, except the color blue. The top three most popular colors of tulips are red, pink and yellow. Tulips have different times that they bloom with some varieties blooming earlier than others. They also come in various lengths and types.
The special interest in tulips has stretched for centuries. Everyone loves tulips. Did you know in the 1600’s, “Tulip mania” swept the Netherlands and tulip trade became so polarizing that it completely disrupted other industries. It became a “mini tulip stock market” with some of the rarest bulbs reaching record high costs of trading at six times someone’s annual salary! Whew! Well, you don’t have to worry about that at Hemingway Hill. Each tulip is a fixed cost of 2.50 a stem with zero admission fees to get in!
Tulip season in Texas is only about three weeks and varies, based on the weather. Tulips begin blooming at the end of February until mid to late March. Due to the short winners in Texas, tulips must go through a special cooling process for 8- 12 weeks in Holland. It makes the tulip think it lives in Chicago. The tulips are then shipped directly to the farm at the end of October and are planted by teams over three successive Saturdays, that the founder of Hemingway Hill, Jennifer Loyall, calls “tulip planting parties”. At the end of a fun day of planting tulips, the old school bell is rung and a family style meal is shared together. Interested in being part of one of our paid tulip all day planting parties and having a real life experience of working on a farm this fall, email us here.
Does a full 8 hours of planting tulips in overalls sound a little much but still want to learn how to grow tulips and take home with you some of the farm’s tulips from Holland for you to plant in your own backyard? We have a 2-hour planting school on Saturday, November 8 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, you can sign up for class here.
